The Initiation of the Kalachakra Tantra invites everyone to pray together for peace within and for all nations and peoples without exception. Considered one of the most powerful ceremonies in the Buddhist tradition, the sole purpose of Kalachakra is to bring peace to this suffering world. This Initiation carries a message of great hope and healing since the Kalachakra Tantra contains teachings on the interrelationship between the outer world, the body, and the mind. Everyone is welcome to participate in the Kalachakra Initiation so long as they come with a good heart for humanity.
After Buddha Shakyamuni turned the Wheel of Dharma three times, on the fifteenth day of the Third Tibetan calendar month, innumerable Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Dakas, Dakinis, Gods, Nagas, and Yakshas assembled at the Great Stupa of Sri Dhanyakata in South India. At the request of King Suchandra of Shambhala, an emanation of Vajrapani, Lord Buddha transformed himself into the yidam Kalachakra and transmitted the entire Empowerment and the Tantra, the highest and most profound teachings.
When Buddha Shakyamuni originally opened the Kalachakra mandala in the Kingdom of Shambhala 2800 years ago, it had a pacifying affect on the world. Throughout the ages many Tibetan masters have granted the Kalachakra Initiation, especially including in modern times His Holiness the Dalai Lama as well as other great masters from all the Tibetan traditions.
"Kalachakra" means "Wheel of Time." Kalachakra is an exceedingly sophisticated system of thought and practice. The outer teachings relate to our external Universe. The inner teachings are concerned with our Body, and its internal constituents and energy channels. The secret teachings are the direct instructions for the complete tantric meditation on the Kalachakra mandala.
Disciples that persevere in the practice of Kalachakra purify all negativies, clearing all obstacles for themselves and the entire world. With all negativities completely purified, the practitioners immediate environment will not only be in harmony, but this harmonious energy will spread to society, to the nation, and to all nations.
His Holiness Penor Rinpoche will grant the Kalachakra Initiation on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the Palyul Retreat Center.
His prayer in offering the Kalachakra is for us to find peace within ourselves, with those around us, within our communities, and, finally, throughout our world community.
This is the second time His Holiness will grant this Initiation in the United States.
